Also known as "Freedom Day" and "Emancipation Day", it is the oldest Nationally celebrated Commemoration of the Ending of Slavery in the United States.
Juneteenth, is a day of celebration, communing with family and friends, and commemorating the official end of slavery in the United States, which occurred on June 19, 1865. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it was not implemented in Texas until General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas two years later to inform all enslaved African Americans were free and that the War had ended.
It is a day marked across the country that is spent bringing families together with picnics, gatherings, parades, and oftentimes celebrated with community awards. Juneteenth is a symbolic day that stands for change, resilience, and the celebration of freedom.
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020, celebrations were largely subdued. As the U.S. moves forward with vaccinations, many states have lifted a lot of the mandates following COVID-19. This year, the city of Galveston will be dedicating a 5,000 square foot mural representing “Absolute Equality”, on the same spot where General Granger informed the enslaved African Americans of their freedom; along with that, Galveston will be holding a parade and festival for this event.
In 1980, Texas was the first state to recognize this celebration, and today, 46 other states, including the District of Columbia recognizes Juneteenth as a ceremonial Holiday. As of June 17th, 2021, President Biden signed the legislation into law commemorating Juneteenth as a federal holiday. For the first time ever, most federal employees will have the opportunity to celebrate Juneteenth on Friday as it falls on a Saturday this year.
